April 11, 2022 "Three Spanish Miracles"
This week has been a fun one! Thank you to everyone who wrote me an email. I will work on responding to everyone (sorry that I am so slow with that). We had zone conference, zone pday, a loaf of homemade bread, and some really cool lessons this week.
Something that I found pretty amusing is that over the past two weeks we have found three pretty hype people for the spanish missionaries to start teaching.
The first one (Cruz) was a man who owned the phone number that used to belong to someone in our ward. When we called him, Cruz answered. After a really awkward moment, we asked if he would like a message of hope. In very broken english, he said yes, but not right now. As we continued to text him, we found out that his eleven year old son was going through chemotherapy and he had really been wanting himself and his family to come close to God during this time. When we gave the Spanish elders his number, they called him, ran over and gave his son a blessing, and Cruz and his family told them that they would forever love the missionaries. It was a very cool miracle.
Soooo.... The next person was a man named Fernando. In our missions, we do a lot of work finding people on facebook. Due to many inappropriate messages that I have been sent from people's accounts that looked like good men, I stopped friending or messaging guys on facebook about nine (?) months ago. BUT, everyone around us was getting so many really cool responses to the gospel, typically from middle-aged men in the area. I began praying that God would help me to find good men who were interested in the gospel. So, for some weird reason, I became friends with Fernando. He doesn't speak much english, but as I have been sharing messages about the gospel, he's been very interested and we just passed him off to the elders.
The third person, holy smokes, was Renee. Sister Waite and I were walking around, saw Renee and started to say hi. The following conversation is probably horrible spanish, and he and Sister Waite and I were abundantly aware of that.
"No anglais!" Came the call.
"Hola! Coma esta?" I replied.
"Bien, bien." He replied, standing up.
"We are missioneros-" Sister Waite started.
"Missionaras." I corrected.
"Missionaras de iglesia de JesuCristo." She amended
"De somos notros?" I added (I'm not really sure if that's right....)
And this man starts pulling wads of cash out of his pants to give to us. We said no!
It became very apparent, from the bottom of his snake skin boots to the top of his cattle hide baseball hat, that this man did not speak much English at all. We pulled out google translate and asked if he would like to hear a message about modern prophets. He said yes. And then we had a very fun google translate conversation while the spanish elders drove up, about ten minutes.
The moral of the story is that the gospel transcends all language barriers, especially our own. To be perfectly 100% straight forward, I am not enough for this work. BUT God is, and He can be with us every step of the way. Press forward brothers and sisters, and God will strengthen you.
With all my love and with the Savior who will always love you more,
